No to veiled prep schooling

Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı answered questions by reporters after touring the “The Great Meeting of Words with Writing” in İstanbul.

We will not allow the labor of the teachers to be disregarded

Answering a question on whether schools were now turning into prep schools Minister Avcı replied saying “we see in the prep school sector that the public has been conditioned that prep schools are irreplaceable and a must for the system. But we rearranged the system to put the teacher, the student and the curriculum at the center of education. Students have to understand that when they are preparing for the exams the curriculum is what they have to base their lessons not the questions prepared at the prep schools because in the past the various entrance exams were based on questions geared to prep schools. After the new arrangements the questions asked at these exams will be focused on the curriculum, the teacher and the student. There may be question marks and confusion in the minds on this issue. But now we will have a proper system. Students and parents should not panic. They also should not opt for different types of arrangements. I an stressing once again that we are putting an end to veiled prep schooling and pushing the school out of the center of education and a system that disregard the labor of the teachers.”

“The points scored at the TEOG exams are very clear”

Answering to claims that a student with low scores had been admitted to the prestigious Robert College “as far as I can see there is some kind of a confusion on how students will be admitted with which entrance exam scores into these schools. The rules are clear how the scores are given at the TEOG (high school entrance exams) organized by the Ministry of National education. The rules are also clear how the schools will admit students according to these exams. However, some schools select students according to the scores in three or four sections of these exams. The parents are confused at times on which school regards which section of the scores to enlist students. Ministry inspectors looking into the issue have said the student has received such scores at the TEOG exams. You have to take into consideration the overall scores at TEOG.”

Minister Avcı said the issue will be resolved according to the regulations of the school and the applications that have been made in the past.

KPSS investigation will be shaped according to the court ruling on the issue

Asked about the investigation that the questions of the Public Personnel Recruitment Exams (KPSS) were stolen and some people received high schools and were unjustly placed in state departments Minister Avcı said “Let the investigation and legal procedures on the 2010 KPSS be completed. Let us see who did what and if someone was placed in a state office unjustly. Once this is determined each ministry and state department will do whatever is necessary if there is a crime. You cannot act without a court verdict.

No use to be touchy

Asked about a story book distributed in Keşan the Minister replied “as you know fabl is a story book technique being used since Ezop. So it is really unnecessary for our teachers, our students and our parents to be so touchy about it. For we know that since Ezop animals are talking in the story books like human beings. It would be wrong to attach too much meaning into it at object to animals talking. There is no insult in the books. People are displaying sensitivity over the headlines. We can’t judge Ezop after this hour…”
